Last night, the Met Gala was on.

The theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, so you can probably understand quite well that the iconic stairs were fairly stacked with a myriad of hashtag looks that were equal parts over the top, extra, and totally gaudy (but in the best way possible).

The Met Gala is not a competition; therefore, no one individual can ‘win’ it.

It is a celebration of fashion, a means of raising money for New York’s Metropolitan Museum, a way for many celebrities to prove that they suck at taking directing as they show up wearing something not pertaining to the theme at all.

Several celebrities had their 2022 Met Gala red carpet moment in black, and the choice was fitting, as there’s something undeniably regal about the colour. The theme, “Gilded Glamour,” challenged stars to show up in their best ensembles inspired by the Gilded Age, and everyone certainly gave it their own spin.

Lizzo looked majestic in a Thom Browne corseted little black dress, enhanced with a voluminous cape coat with gilded leaf details running throughout. Ariana DeBose was on the same page with her Moschino ensemble, which featured golden details that were hard to miss. Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner also embraced a silhouette reminiscent of the Victorian era, clad in a voluminous Prada skirt with distressed fabric details visible all along the front and back and a sheer black top with an embellished fishnet layered over it. Each year, when the Met Gala rolls around, fans look to the stars to see what lavish and over-the-top costumes celebrities have concocted to show off while strutting their stuff on the red carpet.

The event is generally co-chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour – she’s an honorary co-chair this year – and a handful of celebrities and public figures. This year, singer Billie Eilish, actor Timothee Chalamet, tennis icon Naomi Osaka and poet Amanda Gorman took on such duties for the event held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Each year, the attendees are expected to don jaw-dropping outfits that align with a theme that promotes an exhibit at the museum. This year’s theme is “In America.”

Today is the second Monday in May, and anyone even remotely into fashion or pop culture knows that means it’s Met Gala day.

With Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda as co-chairs, In America: An Anthology of Fashion as the theme and an A-list celeb guest list, it’s set to be one hell of an event, as always.

Held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the charity event aims to raise funds for the Costume Insitute. Tickets for the glamorous event cost $35,000 per person, and $200-300,000 for a table. With the price of tickets drastically rising since the 90s, not just anybody gets to go, only the most elite.

Symbolically, this year’s gala was co-chaired by Gen Z darlings Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman and Naomi Osaka, with Wintour stepping aside to be an ‘honorary chair’. The sponsor? Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala 2021 outfit has divided fans as celebrities gathered to dress for the theme: Celebrating In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Kim arrived at the Met Gala 2021 last night in a black bodysuit that covered every inch of the star’s skin. The custom bodysuit from Balenciaga featured pointed stiletto boots and a long split cape that cascaded out the back of the outfit.

Although her hair and make-up were not visible, the star wore a headpiece that gave the illusion her hair was styled in a long black ponytail style.

The Met Gala returned last night with its usual explosion of sequins, sparkles and old school razzle dazzle, as 600 of Anna Wintour’s nearest and dearest descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for fashion’s annual big night out.

While 2021’s event had celebrated the first instalment of a two-part exhibition at the museum with a theme of In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, last night’s had centred on the latter half — In America: An Anthology of Fashion, with a gilded glamour dress code that specified white tie in small print on the invite.

The theme referred to the Gilded Age of America, a term coined by Mark Twain in 1873 referring to the period from 1870 to 1890 when America went through a period of unprecedented industrialisation, increasing prosperity and sociocultural change. Some guests, like Alicia Keys, nodded to the skyscrapers that shot up in
